Bank Robbery Suspect Killed in Police Shootout Identified as Dustin Riley Horwoth
Belleville, IN — Authorities have identified the bank robbery suspect killed in a shootout with police as Dustin Riley Horwoth, a man with a significant criminal history dating back to the mid 2000s.
According to investigators, the incident in Belleville ended in an exchange of gunfire between Horwoth and law enforcement officers. Additional details about what led up to the confrontation have not yet been fully released, and the case remains under investigation.
A review of Horwoth’s past reveals a major crime spree in 2005. In a past interview, Horwoth admitted to robbing between 17 and 20 auto parts stores across Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina over the course of roughly one month, taking tens of thousands of dollars.
In that same interview, he said he targeted those businesses because he was familiar with their operations from prior experience. In many of the robberies, he approached employees under the pretense of needing assistance before implying he was armed and demanding cash.
Horwoth was arrested in May 2005 in South Carolina following a police chase. He was later sentenced to more than a decade in prison, including a 15 year sentence connected to multiple cases across different states.
