Maximum 50 Year Sentence Handed Down for Brutal Attack at Plainfield Correctional Facility
PLAINFIELD, IN — A Hendricks County judge has sentenced Robert Allen Miller to 50 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, the maximum sentence allowed by law, for a July 2024 attack and robbery inside the Plainfield Correctional Facility that resulted in the death of fellow inmate Jeffrey Clouser.
A Hendricks County jury found Miller guilty of Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Aggravated Battery following the violent assault. According to prosecutors, Clouser was a medically vulnerable inmate who relied on assistance from others because of significant health issues.
Evidence presented during the trial showed that Miller entered Clouser's cell before violently attacking him. Prosecutors said Miller then stole commissary items and other personal property belonging to Clouser before leaving the cell. Clouser was later found with severe injuries and ultimately died. His death was ruled a homicide, though Miller was not charged or convicted of murder in the case.
During Monday's sentencing hearing, the court identified several aggravating factors that supported the maximum sentence. Those included Miller's extensive criminal history, the fact that he committed the crimes while already serving a prison sentence, his lack of remorse, and the vulnerability of the victim. Judge Mark Smith sentenced Miller to serve 50 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.
In a statement following the sentencing, Hendricks County Prosecutor Loren Delp said the sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and ensures Miller is held accountable for his violent actions.
