Parents Held on $1M Bond as Court Records Reveal Details in Stilesville Child Death Investigation

STILESVILLE, Ind. — Court records are revealing disturbing allegations following the death of an 11-year-old girl in Stilesville earlier this month, a case that has now led to serious felony charges against her parents.

Kenneth Vasquez, 39, and Elba Vazquez, 35, are each charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Level 1 felony under Indiana law. Both remain held in the Hendricks County Jail on $1 million bonds as the case proceeds through the courts.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the family’s home in the 6000 block of West U.S. 40 shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 14 after the child was reported unresponsive. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the girl was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to information contained in court filings, investigators quickly began to suspect the death may have been the result of ongoing neglect and abuse. Interviews conducted with other children in the home, along with physical evidence collected inside the residence, raised significant concerns about the child’s living conditions and treatment over an extended period of time.

Records tied to the case indicate the child may have been isolated from others in the home for periods of time and that investigators found evidence suggesting she had not been provided consistent access to adequate food or care. Authorities reported the girl showed signs of severe malnourishment when examined, along with other injuries that investigators believed were consistent with prolonged neglect.

Detectives also documented conditions inside the home that they say contributed to the decision to file charges. Evidence collected included items from both the basement and living areas of the residence, along with observations made during the search that investigators believe help establish a pattern of treatment leading up to the child’s death.

Statements gathered during the investigation, including those from other children present in the home, are expected to play a key role as the case moves forward. Prosecutors allege the combination of neglect, living conditions, and lack of proper care ultimately led to the child’s death.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information could be released as the case proceeds through the judicial process.

Because this is an active criminal case, the charges filed against Kenneth and Elba Vazquez are allegations. Both are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
