Avon Standoff Ends Peacefully After Suspect Opens Fire on Deputies

AVON, Ind. — A multi‑agency law enforcement response unfolded Monday afternoon after Hendricks County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to a residence in the 1900 block of Bridgewater Drive for a reported mental health crisis involving an armed individual.

Deputies were dispatched around 1:15 PM after the suspect, identified as 18‑year‑old Marquis Virgil, allegedly told dispatchers he was armed and wanted officers to come to his home so he could shoot them. He also claimed a female was inside the residence. Investigators later confirmed Virgil had an active warrant out of Florida for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on law enforcement.

Upon arrival, deputies staged at a safe distance while a negotiator made phone contact with the suspect. The female inside the home was able to exit safely and was moved to a secure location.

Due to the threats made, the Hendricks County Emergency Response Team (ERT) was activated. As ERT units arrived, Virgil began firing from inside the residence, striking the armored vehicle. Nearby residents were immediately instructed to shelter in place, and the area was blocked off for safety.

Additional tactical support was requested from Brownsburg Police Department and Plainfield Police Department as negotiations continued for several hours.

The standoff ended when the suspect attempted to flee the residence on foot. He was quickly apprehended by officers and taken into custody without further incident.

No officers fired their weapons during the standoff, and no injuries were reported. One nearby home and the ERT armored vehicle sustained damage from gunfire.

Charges against Virgil are pending.
