Brownsburg Considering $128,500 Pickleball Noise Mitigation Project at Stephens Park

 BROWNSBURG, IN — Brownsburg officials are moving forward with a proposed $128,500 sound mitigation project at the Stephens Park pickleball courts following ongoing concerns from nearby residents about noise generated by the popular courts.

The proposal was presented to the Brownsburg Town Council as park officials outlined several measures aimed at reducing noise while allowing the courts to remain open for public use.

If approved, the project would include the installation of a new 10 foot fence lined with specialized Acoustiblok soundproofing material, an automated gate system that would secure the courts after operating hours, and the planting of Arrowwood viburnum shrubs to provide an additional natural sound buffer as they mature.

The estimated cost of the project is $128,500. According to town officials, the expense was not included in the current Parks Department budget, meaning staff will look to reserve funds before seeking an additional appropriation to move the project forward.

The proposed improvements come after neighbors raised concerns about the increasing noise from pickleball games, a sport that has grown rapidly in popularity across Indiana and the country. The distinctive sound of pickleball paddles striking the plastic ball has become a common source of complaints in communities where courts are located near residential neighborhoods.

The Brownsburg Town Council has expressed support for pursuing the mitigation efforts, with the funding process expected to move forward in the coming months.
