Swarn Park Brings New Recreation Space and Public Art to Plainfield

PLAINFIELD, Ind. — A new community park in the Hobbs Station development is bringing recreation, history, and public art together in one place.

Swarn Park recently welcomed visitors with the installation of several sculptures created by Indianapolis artist and former Major League Baseball player Micah Johnson. The sculptures feature Johnson’s well-known character Aku, which represents imagination, perseverance, and dreaming big.

The centerpiece of the installation is a large Aku sculpture that rises roughly 25 feet into the air. Several additional Aku statues, each between about 6 and 9 feet tall, are placed throughout the park so visitors can encounter them as they explore the space.

Located within the Hobbs Station development, the park is part of the area’s continued growth as new residential, commercial, and industrial projects take shape. Town leaders say the addition of the park helps create a welcoming gathering space while also adding a creative element to the district.

In addition to the sculptures, Swarn Park offers a range of amenities for residents and visitors. The park includes a playground, pickleball courts, a fenced dog park, and several seating areas designed for families and groups. There are also game areas where visitors can enjoy activities such as cornhole, bocce ball, and table tennis, along with an open lawn that can be used for events and performances.

The park is connected to the Vandalia Trail through a recently completed extension, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to easily access the area. Parking for both vehicles and bicycles is available for those visiting the park.

Swarn Park is named in honor of Lemuel Swarn and his family. After the Civil War, Swarn moved from North Carolina to Indiana with his wife in search of a better life. The family eventually settled in Hendricks County, where they became known for their strong commitment to faith, education, and community.

The new park is expected to serve as a place where residents can gather, spend time outdoors, and experience a unique blend of recreation and public art in Plainfield.
