Concerns Raised Over Teacher’s Social Media Contact With Student At Avon Middle School North
AVON, Ind. — Concerns have been raised by a Hendricks County parent after she says a teacher at Avon Middle School North followed and exchanged direct messages with her daughter on Instagram.
According to the parent, she received an email addressing the situation and was told the teacher had interacted with her child on social media. The parent also said she was informed other students may have had contact with the teacher as well, though those reports have not been independently confirmed.
The student involved is now in high school but previously attended Avon Middle School North, where the teacher worked during the prior school year.
In an email provided to the parent, an Avon High School administrator confirmed the situation had been reviewed by school officials. The message stated that a small number of messages were exchanged between the teacher and student and that the matter was examined internally. School officials indicated they found nothing of a criminal nature in their review.
While the district’s review concluded no criminal conduct occurred, the situation has still prompted discussion among some parents about the boundaries between educators and students on social media. Many parents emphasize the importance of monitoring children’s online interactions and maintaining conversations about digital safety.
A request for comment has been sent to school officials. As of publication, no additional statement had been provided.
Parents with concerns about student safety or staff conduct are generally encouraged to contact school administrators directly so issues can be reviewed through established district procedures.
This remains a developing story and updates will be provided if additional information becomes available.
UPDATE 2/20 9:30pm :
A district communications coordinator confirmed that staff are required to communicate with students only through district-approved systems, and that using personal social media accounts could result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
When asked whether the teacher involved in this situation remains employed or faced discipline, Avon Schools said they cannot comment on personnel matters.
